New 072s/Broad Descriptors!

The next NLS ops alert will announce several new 072/Broad Descriptor subjects. Over the last few days I have added the new ones to your Code file, along with any others that your library was missing. Please map those to your subject headings to make use of them before the next MARC load (which will likely be Friday 6/5 morning).

Until the 072 code is mapped to your subject heading code then it will not change anything on the title-bib record. Go to View - Administration - Code Maintenance and then find code name NLS-072. Any line that has a blank in the subject code column needs to be updated in order to make use of the 072. If none of your 072 codes are mapped to local subjects, we're happy to provide a quote to get this mapping in place. Find out more from the cataloging info sheet  and contact customer support.

To update the subject code select the line, Modify record (Ctrl+O), and in the Subject Code line enter the appropriate subject code. Separate multiple subject codes with a comma but no spaces. For example, if you already have the subject headings Amish Fiction (AMFIC) and Romance (ROM) and want to map the new AMIRAF (Amish Romance) to both of those then you'd type AMFIC,ROM and then save (Ctrl+S).

Attached below is a list of the new 072s and also some suggestions for subjects descriptions and codes to go along with some of the new 072s. Most libraries don't have separate subjects for juveniles so I did not include any on my list.

If your code file has any other new ones besides the ones on the attached list that you never added or mapped, then you've been missing out on getting a local subject added to the title-bib record. A query for the 072  and the Change Headings-Query Set tool are what you'll need to go back and add the subjects.

After loading your new 072 codes I scrolled through and usually cleaned up a few codes that don't actually exist. For example, LEGFAN is not a valid code since AF and JF are the only valid combinations for LEGF - Legal Fiction. If I saw any of the Music Broad Descriptors I deleted those since those aren't used on DB/BR records.

Please note that GRAD (Uncontracted Braille), TACT (Tactile Works), and UEBC (Unified English Braille) do not have any suffixes and that is the complete code.
