Hidden KLAS ID (For Print / Braille titles)

Is it possible to create a hidden KLAS ID that remains searchable? I know that the KLAS ID lands in the MARC 001 field. Can a searchable subfield be added to that 001 field? Or is there another MARC field that could be used?

Consider BR022340. The NLS has allowed this BR number to represent both a print/braille iteration of a book and a downloadable digital braille iteration, it'd be nice if we could create an additional record for PBR022340 to represent the finite print/braille iteration while BR022340 represents the infinite digital braille manifestation of the book. Only it would be best for the PBR version to show up if we searched the KLAS ID for "BR022340."

Is this possible?

KLAS is meant to be able to handle physical and digital (duplication and/or download) distribution of the same title record... could you help me understand why you're wanting two different records for distribution of the same title?

Sure. NLS has created a database no-no by letting BR titles represent something as both infinite and very finite. I'm advocating for splitting those records (somewhere down the road). One for physical print/braille and another for digital braille that patrons can either download from BARD or be served by the duplication queue.

For libraries like mine who serve their braille patrons via Utah, BR no longer stands for something that is physical, except for Print/Braille. Since that format lends itself for an easy prefix change, I envision clarity in using "PBR" to discern between the two. As things are, if a BR is available as both digital download (or DoD) and in print/braille yet all the copies are checked out, it's confusing for end users to see "No copies available."

(If there are scenarios I'm not considering, please call me out. I spend most of my time between audiobooks and large print.)

When you go to a public library OPAC there isn't one record for books in both print and audio; they get 2 different records. NLS should have made this split but have left us to inherit it. Considering NLS has no problems using DB, DBC, DBF, DBG, DBN. etc., I'm somewhat surprised that PBR never became a thing.

I'm pondering if there could be a 2nd, hidden KLAS ID (book #) in case, say, someone finds a print/braille book in Voyager and comes to KLAS searching for it with NLS's BR #. If we could hide the BR # we could safely employ a "PBR" prefix and be assured it will show up in search results. (To be clear, I'm not suggesting we create entirely new numbers to go after the PBR prefix. Keep the same numbers NLS assigned to the BR.)

Here is what Florida does for braille:
Status Rundown
  • If there is an edoc, it will say Active If there is a complete copy somewhere in the Florida network, or it is on BARD.
  • If there is no edoc, but a complete copy here, Physical copy only. These are most likely print/braille.
  • If there is no edoc, and no complete copies in FL, the title status will say CL- Contact Library.
    • It is what shows up on the OPAC, so a patron would call the RA.
    • These are the ones staff can request through ILL (using Multistate OH).
