English/Spanish Bilingual language code

Hello! Hola! What to do with bilingual English/Spanish titles? The Library of Congress, and thus NLS, does not consider E/S to be a valid language code. KLAS does have the ability to include non-standard language codes and most libraries are using some variation of E/S or S/E, etc. Further, there has been a fair amount of inconsistency in how NLS has chosen either English or Spanish for bilingual titles, so for simplicity’s sake we have decided that going forward we will be putting the E/S language code on all English-Spanish bilingual titles. 

If you don't want a separate E/S language we can map it to either English or Spanish. Please contact customer support and we'll set that up for you.
Most libraries are already using E/S or S/E so we aren't planning on a bilingual MARC reload file at the moment. However, if you find a number of your titles should be E/S but aren't please send us a list and we'll be happy to compile a reload file. Or if you want to start using the bilingual E/S let us know and we'll help you out.

What does this mean for your patrons?
The patlang preference must match the language on a book for it to be assigned by nightly. If your patron has a language preference for English and one for Spanish it does not mean they'll also get E/S (or S/E) titles. You need to also add the language preference for E/S (or S/E).

Note on Spanish Subject Heading
If Keystone has done your subject mapping in recent years then the 072 SPAN AF/AN/JF/JN is mapped to the subject heading "Titles in Spanish". NLS tends to put that 072 on any title that has a connection to Spanish including if it is a bilingual title or a learn Spanish book that is mostly in English. If you do not want that subject on bilingual titles, run a query to find all the E/S (or S/E) language titles and then use Change Headings-Query Set to remove the subject.
