BR Records NLS Should Not Have Included In MARC was created by massbibliophile
All:
I was looking for wonky subject headings the other day (as one does) and came across "In French." The heading was used in just one record, a title in braille, which, of course, is in French. I inquired of NLS and got this reply: "Hi all,James, thanks for pointing this out. As part of our preparations to move back to Capitol Hill, I sorted through hundreds of non-English braille books in the basement at Taylor St., most of which had never been cataloged. Many of these are unique items of which we only have one single hard copy version. We kept a number of the most precious items (about 35 titles) with us in the Adams building. We have begun cataloging those, and their numbers are in the BR25441-25474 range. We shipped the majority of the non-English braille from the basement to MSCE, and they will be available to request via Interlibrary Loan once we are able to catalog them.James, I think you are probably right that this set of books in Adams should only be in the NLS Voyager catalog and not in WebReads or KLAS. They can’t be circulated to patrons, but we needed to document them as part of our collection. Happy to hear other suggestions, though."There was some further discussion, but NLS decided that, instead of recataloging them as BRA titles (since that is what they are), the will keep the BR numbers and we can purge them from our systems. Now, you don't *need* to purge them, but you would then need to mark them up all over so folks know they can't order them through KLAS or the OPAC, but only through ILL.
Here is the sequence of numbers:
